What is a Duplex Filter?

A duplex filter is a filter with two filter housings that allows for continuous filtration while one side is being serviced or cleaned. This design is used in applications that require continuous flow of liquids, such as in food and beverage and industrial applications.

Benefits of Duplex Filters

  • Continuous operation – The duplex design allows the system to keep running while filter elements are being replaced or maintained.

  • Protection for mechanical equipment – Duplex strainers remove foreign matter from the piping system, which can help protect mechanical equipment.
  • Mounting – Duplex Filters can be mounted onto a skid or trolley for a mobile filtration solution.
  • Diverse Range of Products – Due to so many industries being reliant on filter, there are many different solutions depending on application. While these housings function the same way, they are all different based on their specifications, operating conditions and safe usage parameters. You can find our full range of Duplex Units below!
Duty/Standby Arrangement Means Zero Disruption for Your Filtration Solution!

Duplex filters eliminate process disruption and facilitate continuous and uninterrupted flow. Switch over is achieved with 3 way valves on smaller systems and inlet/outlet butterfly valves, or ball valves on larger systems. These valves enable the users to switch the flow path of liquid to the second housing in order to perform filter media changeouts without interruption.  Our 2BFOS2 (Duty/Standby) Bag Housings come with butterfly valves pre-installed for quick and easy installation.

PLC Monitoring can be Incorporated to Monitor, Detect and Log Filter Blockage

Siga Filtration offers acuraControl to provide detailed measurements, logging and communication of differential pressure. The unit is also capable of measuring temperature and pressure. Devices such as acuraControl allow the user to detect and signal blockages without the need to open the housing, ensuring continuous operation.

How do Duplex Filters Work?
1 - Fluid enters through the Inlet

This fluid travels from the inlet, into one of the filter housings.

2 - Liquid passes through the filter media and undergoes filtration

Bag Filter Housings such as 2BFOS2 (Duty/Standby) are compatible with a wide variety of filter bags, elements and Stainless Steel baskets.

3 - Filtered liquid exits the housing through the outlet

Depending on your filtration solution, this may not be the end of the filtration process. Duplex units can be installed in series alongside other filters without to enable a finer filtration solution.

4 - Flow of Liquid is changed to standby housing

After some time, the filter media or basket will block. The flow of liquid is therefore directed to the unused filter housing whilst the blocked filter undergoes maintenance

5 - Old filter media is replaced in blocked filter

This process prepares the inactive housing for operation so that it may be used if the other housing becomes clogged and needs maintenance.

6 - Support Basket is uninstalled, cleaned and then reinstalled!

The Support Basket can also get dirty, and usually will require cleaning. This process is crucial in hygienic or food grade applications with strict sanitary regulations.

What are Duplex Strainers?

Duplex Strainers are filters made from two parallel basket filters that are connected via valves. These valves, can be used to divert flow of liquid to the standby basket filter while the other undergoes maintenance. Duplex Strainers are typically used to capture larger particles that can be seen with the naked eye. There is significant use of duplex basket strainers in industrial filtration applications thanks to their versatility, reliability and cost-effectiveness. Siga Filtration offers a wide range of duplex basket strainers to suit your filtration solution!

What are the Advantages of Duplex Basket Strainers?
  • Easy to maintain – Duplex Basket Strainer baskets are easy to clean and/or replace, ensuring continuous flow and reducing any process disruptions.
  • Cost Efficient – By mitigating the amount of process disruption and maintenance time, duplex basket strainers contribute to long term cost savings.
  • Versatile Solutions – These duplex baskets can be used in a variety of applications and industries, offering a rigorous filtration solution that can be adapted to various operational requirements.
  • Easy to install – The compact design of duplex basket strainers enables easy installation in tight spaces. This makes them ideal for pre-existing processes or for industries with limited space available.
  • Reliable Performance – With their 304 or 316 Stainless Steel construction, duplex baskets offer long lasting reliability and durability as a filtration solution.
  • Continuous Filtration – Duplex basket filters can operate even during maintenance, reducing system shutdowns and maximizing process efficiency.
  • Safer Operation – Having one of the housings on standby offers an extra layer of security in case any of the housings face blockages and or failure.
