MRI machines generate significant heat during operation, primarily due to the powerful magnets and radiofrequency (RF) systems. The cooling systems help dissipate this heat, ensuring the MRI machine operates within safe temperature ranges, maintaining both the machine’s performance and the safety of patients and operators.
A chiller unit cools the water or cooling fluid used for cooling the MRI machine. Chilled water can build up particulates over time which can cause fouling of heat transfer surfaces. This can result in maintenance demand and insufficient cooling.
Safety Guidelines from MHRA for Magnetic Resonance Imaging Equipment in Clinical Use state that: “All equipment brought into the MRI ENVIRONMENT should not contain significant amounts of ferromagnetic material in order to avoid the projectile effect from the static magnetic field.”
Projectile effect is when a magnetic field pulls ferromagnetic objects into the magnetic bore of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. This phenomenon can result in catastrophic consequences for individuals near the scanner and significant damage to equipment. All filters offered for MRI applications are constructed from non ferromagnetic austenetic Stainless Steels.
