Siga Filtration was selected for the supply of Stainless Steel filter elements for the removal of contaminants at a Whisky Distillery. Charring whisky barrels is a precise process which involves burning the inside of the barrel to create a layer of charred wood. This char imparts flavour and colour to the whisky.
Although uneven charring and cracks are addressed during the charring process, some of the brittle char particle can flake off over time and cause sedimentation.
Disposable filter elements and filter bags are commonly used for barrel char particle removal in distilleries. We were approached by a distillery to offer a cleanable solution as a replacement to the current disposable elements.
Siga Filtration supplied our 316L food grade Stainless Steel SINTRIPore filter elements with code 7 end fittings. SINTRIPore elements are constructed from 316 Stainless Steel and can be cleaned and reused. This is an environmentally friendly option as compared to conventional disposable plastic elements and provides a cleanable solution which can be reused many times.
226/fin (Code 7) type end fittings allow for installation in standard filter housing without the need for modifications.
In addition, these elements can be supplied with 3.1 material certificates for traceability.
Haze in whisky, often referred to as “chill haze”. Whisky contains trace amounts of fatty acids, esters, and natural oils derived from the grains, fermentation process, and the charred oak barrels used for aging.
These compounds have limited solubility in alcohol. As the temperature of the whisky decreases, their solubility decreases as well. When the temperature drops below a certain point (usually around 4°C or 39°F), the long-chain fatty acids and esters begin to clump together, forming tiny particles. These particles scatter light, making the whisky appear hazy or cloudy.
Most commercial whiskies are chill-filtered, a process where the whisky is cooled to near freezing, causing haze-forming compounds to precipitate out. The whisky is then passed through fine filters to remove them.
This ensures clarity, especially in whiskies below 46% ABV.
